Animals in art
My books The Animals in That Country and Gunflower go deep with nonhuman animals as central, communicating characters. Read ‘Cat at the Fire Front’, the first story in Gunflower, here.
The French translation of The Animals in That Country , Les animaux de ce pays (éditions Dalva 2025, translated by Lise Garond), is shortlisted for two animal-rights-focused book prizes: the 2025 Prix 30 millions d’amis and the 2026 Prix Maya.
I have also written about animals for The Guardian, The Saturday Paper and The North American Review, among others.
As the ‘animal expert’ on ABC Kids’ Animal Sound Safari, I roar and hoot along with Lawrence Gunatilaka as we journey through human histories with animals.
Author Hayley Singer and I also ran a short instagram book show series, Anigram.

Animal Activism
I have been lucky to work with organisations and festivals that combine art and activism to further animal rights.
— Listen to a panel with Peter Singer and James Bradley on ‘Animals — Us and them? How does loving animals go together with industrial farming?’ at Byron Bay Writers’ Festival, featured on ABC
— Read my Q&A with Writers Rebel on rebellion in writing.
— Watch readings for Arukah Animal International:
* from ‘Those Last Days of Summer’, a story about chickens in a battery farm, from my collection Gunflower.
* ‘Fish’, a story about merpeople from Griffith Review 28: Animal Magic. This reading is in support of Arukah’s campaign to end intensive octopus farming.
— Listen to a discussion with Philip Armstrong at Word Christchurch about animals in literature, featured on RNZ.
— Watch a poem commissioned by Red Room Poetry on the extinction of the Christmas Island pipistrelle.
— Listen to an episode of Knowing Animals with Siobhan O'Sullivan on Storytelling and Animal Voices
— Watch a Q&A with Vine Sanctuary’s pattrice jones
